Would you be surprised if I were to tell you that people don’t gain weight because of what they eat but rather WHY they eat? Did you know that over 85% of weight gain caused by emotions? Emotional eating is a habit of consuming food to make ourselves feel better. We have found over 20 different emotional reasons that trigger Emotional eating. And yet, there is only ONE real reason- a physical hunger.
We are doing this in two ways: Either moving towards good feelings or moving away from negative feelings.
We either associating food with Positive emotion/s or we are reaching for food to avoid the negative ones. For some of us, food has become a way to relax, to unwind after a long day or to reward yourself (I deserve it), to celebrate life. For others food has become a source of comfort, peace, love, relaxation or safety. Some turn to food when they stressed, anxious or worry; others when they angry, sad or bored. This is what Emotional Eating is about. Turning to food to make yourself feel BETTER. Yet only feeling guilty, ashamed, sad and angry with yourself.
Weight loss strategies so far have been focused on one thing: Consume less calories than you burn. The problem is it doesn’t work. Obesity rates remain historically high despite a 40- year focus on eating less, low-calorie, low-fat diets. Because at the end it all comes down to self-control and self-discipline.
If you have fallen off a diet, you may assume that you are lacking control, discipline and will power. I bet you have felt ashamed, angry and upset with yourself, which has only caused you turn to food again and the vicious cycle of overeating, emotional eating, feeling out of control, trying to feel better by turning to food… continues spinning you out of control. What are you trying to control? The Food? That is why you have failed before. We can’t control the food when you are not in control of the Emotion, the reason WHY you overeat/crave comfort foods.
When we use the will power to fight with emotions, we lose. This is a normal human psychology. When we fight with our uncounted mind, we lose. NO ONE can control the unconscious mind.
Because the willpower comes from the conscious part of the mind (up to 7% of brain capacity) and an emotion comes from the Unconscious part of the Mind (up to 97% of brain capacity). In a battle of a thought and emotion, emotion always wins.
