In some parts of Africa, people drill small holes in the trees and fill them up with banana chips. The hole is big enough only for a monkey to insert its hand. Once a monkey grabs the banana chip, the fist becomes too big to pull it out of the hole. You would think that the monkey will let go, but it doesn’t. It gets trapped and it gets caught by the villagers.
This story is a metaphor for how we often deal with our “negative” emotions and thoughts and get stuck.
Nobody likes to feel anxious or fearful.
When you try to control “negative” emotions/thoughts by thinking more about them, you feel more and more trapped. It makes sense to let go of what is actually causing you to destress, but you keep holding on.
You get caught in the vicious cycle and feel that you are losing control.
We all do that, by the way. To a degree.
We have been thought NOT TO DEAL with our feelings.
The Monkey mind tries to get rid of them only to get stuck more and more.
What does our self-help community suggest to us? Relax somehow and focus on the positive or change your thoughts at will to eliminate uncomfortable feelings. Really? How?
What makes sense in the logical world doesn’t work in a world of emotions. Why?
Because 7% of the mind can’t control the other 93%.
Dealing with life requires dealing with emotions and thoughts. Feeling the range of emotions is not a disease.
Why do we do the wrong things for the right reasons?
Learning to accept our feeling is what Steven Hayes in his book “A Liberated Mind” calls Psychological flexibility.

Here are a few ways to develop Psychological flexibility skills:

Acceptance. Allow yourself to feel. Set up your Feeling Goals.

Presence. Redirect your attention to the NOW. Choose to pay attention to how you feel in the now.

Greater purpose. Highest values create greatest motivations. Choose to BE rather than DO.

Committed actions. Build your new habits in small steps. Focus more on the reasons and the process.

Have you ever stepped into a cold shower? Have you ever been splashed with cold water?
Did you know that initial shock you experienced back then triggered the fight-or-flight reaction that is no different from your reaction to any threat, internal or external? I mean, any.You see, the way we react to anything is the way we react to everything.
Over several billion years ago we came out from Earth’s primordial slime to become evolutionary winners. How did we do that?
We lived for days with no food; we walked for miles barefoot; we survived with no heat, we swam long distances…
It’s only in the last few hundred years, we have lost touch with our evolutionary roots. We have become so comfortable in our air-conditioned homes, with our instant heating sources, cars, computers, WIFI, and all that comfort and convenience.
And yet, the uncomfortable truth is we are crippled with anxiety, we have more autoimmune diseases now than ever before.
No, we are no longer running away from dangerous animals. We are now running away from our own emotions and thoughts and we don’t feel safe at all.
If the parasympathetic system controls rest/sleep and digestion, and sympathetic controls fight or flight response than I want to know how I can have more control of the switch between the two.
There are many ways to train your brain to switch back to parasympathetic. I use cold showers as my training tool to get control over the switch.
It took me a month of morning showers to flip the switch; to step into a cold shower and feel relaxed and comfortable.
I have created a new reaction. I have bonded an old sensation to a positive emotion.
I have discovered that I don’t need to try and control my emotions. I can take control of HOW I WANT to experience them.
I have found my own Wedge, the flip between fight or flight and the flow state. Now I know that I am not my feelings and I am not my thoughts. I am not even my mind. Because I can change it.
Coldwater is just a symbol of any stress trigger. How I react to cold water is very much how I react to life.
I have now changed it. And it feels great.
My hope is that you will get inspired to find your own Wedge too.

There is nothing wrong with you, if you have anxiety.

Your Amygdala responsible for the fight or flight reaction is working, and it responds to the informational threats as if they were physical threats.

What does it mean? It means that even though we are no longer using the fight or flight reaction to run away from a dangerous animal, we‘ve got accustomed to run away from our own thoughts and feelings.

We react to our thoughts and feelings as if there were physical threats to our lives.

Are we doomed to be stuck in the fight and flight response? Do we have another choice?

Highly successful people receive much of their endorphins through exploration, adventure-seeking, and even Post Traumatic Growth.

In fact, Post Traumatic Growth creates an emotional resilience to stress. Have you heard a storey of someone who has overcome trauma and came out of it being stronger and more resilient?

Let’s look at Wim Hof. A man who has lost his wife to suicide and been left alone with 4 kids.

These are the records of his Post Traumatic Growth:

The record for running the fastest half marathon barefoot on ice or snow in the Arctic.

Completing a 41km marathon in the Namibian desert without water or food.

The world record for being in direct contact with ice, spending an hour and 52 minutes submerged up to his neck.

He swam more than 57 metres under ice with only trunks and a pair of goggles.

Most people would go into shock, hypothermia, hysteria, pain, anxiety. How did he do that And how does a surfer overcome a fear of death facing a 120 ft high wave in California?

How did skateboarder, Danny Way jump over the Great Wall of China with a G force of 5 at the start?

Is there something in common with all these people? Do you want to know what that is?

All of them have stated that they have unconditionally accepted the fear to do an impossible.

Here is the output. Being relaxed in the cold, finding stillness in the chaos is what re-programs our nervous system with the new arsenal of RESPONSES. This is pure neuro-science.

Unconditional acceptance of anxiety or fear transcends it into peace.

And you can make it work for you the next time and every time when you choose to accept what is and relax into the stillness of NOW.

Choose to give your brain a new arsenal of responses and be in control.

Based on book “The wedge” by Scott Carney

If you are a human, then you have experienced anxiety and fear before.

This means that you too have a limbic brain that receives “raw” sensations from the outside (touches, smells, images…). When the limbic brain receives a sensation, it checks for a similar record from the past. If there is no record, the limbic librarian passes sensation to the paralimbic cortex, the center of
EMOTION to figure out how to deal with the new sensation.

Parallimbic center pairs the new sensation with YOUR CURRENT EMOTIONAL STATE and creates a “symbol’ to store it in the library of the limbic brain.

The next time the librarian encounters the same sensation, it pulls the symbol RIGHT AWAY and passes the old emotional value whether it is relevant to the current situation or not. This is neuroscience that tells us that the brain never comes up with new emotional responses on its own.

Why this information is truly important? This is an antidote to anxiety and fear. Unless we intentionally create a new neuro symbol, we will continue reacting to life in the old programmed ways, with fears, anxiety, sadness, anger…

When you bond raw sensation (a trigger) with chosen emotion, you create a new symbol that your brain will be using in the future. This is how 14 000 of my clients have already reprogrammed their minds.

How do you do that? You can’t learn it by reading about it. The only way to re-program your mind is by experiencing it.

I really want to share with you a life changing experience, so that you too train your brain to react to life in a calm and confident way.

Join the group of like-minded people on September 17 from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm for the first of 5 life-changing lessons of “High Five to Live” on Zoom.

I want to offer you a little game. A game we all have played in childhood. A “Let’s pretend” game.

Read the question and pretend/imagine how it would feel like…. The right answer to the question is the way you feel.

Enjoy learning something important while asking yourself a question and allow the feeling to arrive… nothing serious.

What would it feel like if I look at adversity as an opportunity?

What would it take for me to look at adversity as my opportunity to change?

What would it take for the universe to deliver that__new feeling to me?

Use the Mind Bending Questions to bend the unreality of fear, anxiety and uncertainty into
limitless opportunities, inner growth and powerful change.

Talk to your unconscious mind directly by using the most indirect way of communicating with it. When you ask mind-bending questions, you get the results right away. The results are the
FEELINGS.

When you ask yourself what would the solution feel like, the answer you receive is that solution that you were looking for. When you change the way you feel about a problem, it is no longer a problem.

Have you ever seen a Blue Elephant? No?

What happens when I say, “Don’t think of a Blue Elephant?” Do you see it? Right? (If you don’t, check your pulse. You may be dead.) I have a feeling you want to know the cause of this phenomena.

Some time ago I discovered that my unconscious mind too deletes the negation and goes straight to the point. I have realized that the mind acts like a Genie. It always says “Your wish is my command” when it comes to thinking. It doesn’t question my thinking. It doesn’t try to choose the right thought for me. It only supports me 100% of the time.

Whether I am focusing on what I want or I am focusing on what I don’t want. And not just my mind acts like a Genie from the bottle. Any mind does it. Yours too.

Do you remember the time when you were worried about something? Thinking about what could happen, trying to avoid “Don’t’ think about it” and yet falling into the obsessive overthinking. You were trying to resolve the situation by thinking more about “what if…” While your Blue Elephant was getting bigger and bigger.

You see, this is how we create anxiety and fears… by continually focusing on what we don’t want to happen. Because the Genie says YES to everything that we are paying attention to and focusing on. The Genie always creates more of IT.

For the same reason, if you say to a child who’s carrying a precarious lunch tray, “Don’t drop it!” they will drop it. Do you want to live anxiety/fear-free? Train yourself to focus on what you really want rather than what you don’t want.

How?

Here are three steps to send the right message to your Genie:

Watch your self-talk. Notice when you say to yourself “I don’t want this to happen”.

Reframe your statement from negative to positive. Ask yourself “What DO I WANT?”

Reframe to Positive when you hear yourself talking to others using a negation.

You don’t need to feed the anxiety/fear. You don’t need to feed a Blue Elephant anymore. Let us free from the clutter of negative emotions and images of failure our own minds and the minds of people we interact with.

Your wish is your command.

And of course, telling someone who is deeply in love, “Don’t think about your sweetheart!” gets you a smile.

I have noticed that many of my clients who have come to get rid of anxiety and/or insomnia have been covert or full-blown perfectionists.

As a recovering Perfectionist, I had to learn a lot about that “Perfect” part of my personality before I could make peace with it. I thought that this small excuse in the world of perfect may help you to avoid the struggle and lost years of joy.

I wonder if you can recognize your “Perfect” part:

Perfect is not good enough

Perfect is constantly looking for acceptance and approval from others

Perfect relies on other people’s opinions

Perfect punishes and blames you for making mistakes

Perfect is not aiming to succeed. It is simply trying to avoid failure at all costs

Perfect lives in the past or in the future, but it never lives in the NOW

Perfect is afraid to fail, so it procrastinates until you fail. It fails you before you try.

Perfect is stagnant. It can’t grow. It has already reached its destination. Perfect is dead.

Do we really mean to be perfect? As kids, did we dream about having a perfect body, a perfect car, a perfect job, a perfect partner…? Or were we just inspired to be GREAT at what we choose to be and do?

Have we, adults lost something important? How did we turn from great to perfect, from wonder to anxiety, from excitement to security?

I wonder what will happen when you accept:

You are not perfect

You will fail and you will be wrong at times

You can’t hate yourself enough to get better

I am curious what will happen if/when you choose to:

Be honest with yourself and only do/be the best you can. Not perfect, just the best you can do/be.

Spend more time to BE. Balance the doing with the being.

Make peace with “NOW”. Do Tai Chi, learn Self-Hypnosis, practice Yoga or Meditation, walk outside…

What if you are right and you are not perfect? And when you accept it, you can change it. When you accept you will grow. Let us grow together.
